The Cardiology Department is headed by Dr. Luis Braz-Ruivo, our board-certified cardiologist. Dr. Braz-Ruivo has practiced veterinary cardiology for the last 20 years and has extensive experience in the management and diagnosis of congenital and acquired heart disease.
During your appointment, Dr. Braz-Ruivo will review your pet’s history, review the past medical record and perform a thorough physical exam. After that he will discuss the most appropriate tests necessary to understand your pet’s heart condition. Since some pets object to the restraint required for this simple test, we may give your pet a mild sedative in order to keep him/her calm. Dr. Braz-Ruivo performs most tests with the client present and will explain his findings in real time. At the end of the visit he will follow up with a personalized letter that will also be faxed/emailed to your referring veterinarian.
Our cardiology service is equipped with the most advanced equipment to accurately diagnose heart disease, including echocardiography, electrocardiography, in-house Holter monitoring, in-house ECG telemetry, blood pressure, digital radiography, fluoroscopy and advanced CT imaging.
Critical cases are admitted to the ICU to be monitored around the clock by our team of dedicated technicians and doctors.
Our Cardiology service is dedicated to the well-being and comfort of your pet, and will take additional time to talk you through the process of managing heart disease. We are available by phone or email to set up recheck appointments, refill medications, etc. Additionally, we are happy to discuss your pet’s treatment with the other veterinarians involved in your pet’s care, including our own team of specialists and emergency clinicians.
In many cases, heart disease can be successfully managed long-term, and many patients will live a long, happy life. We will be there for you every step of the way!
